Cinnamon & Brown Sugar Apple Chips Ingredients

Before you go running to the store, let me give you the inside scoop on the key ingredients:

Apples

Native to: Central Asia

Top 3 nutrients: vitamin C, fiber, potassium

Choose your favourite apple variety for this recipe! Each variety has unique sugar and water content, which can influence the texture, sweetness, and flavour of your apple chips, making every batch deliciously different.

Brown Sugar

Native to: South Pacific (sugarcane); Europe (sugarbeets)

Brown sugar is recommended in this recipe for its rich, caramel-like flavor, but feel free to use your favorite sweetener. Coconut sugar, maple sugar, or white sugar all pair beautifully with the warm cinnamon and apple combination.

Cinnamon

Native to: Southeast Asia

Top 3 nutrients: manganese, calcium, iron

I have nothing specific shopping wise for this ingredient… so how about a cool fact?

Cinnamon is derived from the inner bark of trees in the genus Cinnamomum. The bark is stripped, dried, and curls into rolls, forming the familiar “cinnamon sticks.”

How to dehydrate the apples

Basic steps:
  1. Wash and peel apples. If you’re doing rounds, you’ll want to core the apples as well. For any other style, you can simply cut around the core.
  2. Slice apples into about 1/4″ thick pieces. (Note: You can do slices, rounds, cubes or even shredded)
  3. Combine cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl and mix well.
  4. Put apples in a large bowl. Sprinkle with sugar mixture and toss to coat the apples.
  5. Arrange the apples on dehydrating trays with enough room for air to circulate between pieces (avoid over lapping as much as possible)
  6. Place in the dehydrator dehydrate at 135℉ for 10-12 hours

It’s that easy!

Storage Instructions

Here are some tips to help you maximize the shelf life of your Cinnamon & Brown Sugar Apple Chips:

  • Keep stored in a sealable container or bag
  • Vacuum sealing can extend the shelf life by up to three times its normal duration! This is useful if you’re prepping lots for longer term use.
  • Store in a cool, dry and dark place. For longer term storage, it’s recommended to keep stored in the freezer (especially if not vacuum sealed)

When dried and stored properly, your apple chips should last for several months to a few years!

Cinnamon & Brown Sugar Apple Chips FAQ's

Do I have to peel the apples?

Nope – you can leave the peels on if preferred. That being said, I typically only recommend this with organic apples (that haven’t been coated with a protective wax) as the wax could interfere with the dehydrating process. The peels will also be hard once dehydrated – I simply prefer the texture of chips without it.

Can I use any apple variety?

Absolutely! Feel free to use your favourite apple variety.

Can I use a different sugar?

Yes! Brown sugar is recommended in this recipe for its rich, caramel-like flavor, but feel free to use your favorite sweetener. Coconut sugar, maple sugar, or white sugar all pair beautifully with the warm cinnamon and apple combination.
