Apple Pear-fection Trail Mix

Before you go running to the store, let me give you the inside scoop on the key ingredients:

Dried Apples

Native to: central Asia

Top 3 nutrients: vitamin C, fiber, potassium

Feel free to use dried/dehydrated or freeze-dried apples. If you have a dehydrator, making your own apple chips is well worth it!

Dried Pears

Native to: Middle East & South Asia

Top 3 nutrients: fiber, vitamin C, potassium

Like apples, feel free to use dried/dehydrated or freeze-dried pears. If you have a dehydrator, making your own dried pears is well worth the effort. Although you can use any pear variety, I recommend Bartlett due to their sweet and notable flavour once dehydrated.

Walnuts

Native to: Middle East, Central Asia & North America

Top 3 nutrients: healthy fats, protein, fiber

I personally prefer walnut halves to give this mix some texture and sustenance, but chopped walnuts work too!

Pepitas

Native to: North America (pumpkins)

Top 3 nutrients: medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s), fiber, manganese

Unsalted or salted will do!

Salted Caramel Chocolate

Native to: Central & South America (cocoa)

Top 3 nutrients: flavonoids, magnesium, iron

Salted caramel chocolate is recommended because of the flavour combination with the pears and pepitas, however milk or dark chocolate works great too! Also, I personally prefer to buy my favourite chocolate and chop it into bite size pieces, but feel free to use chocolate chips!

Storage Instructions

Here are some tips to help you maximize the shelf life of your Apple Pear-fection Trail Mix:

  • Keep stored in a sealable container or bag
  • Vacuum sealing can extend the shelf life by up to three times its normal duration! This is useful if you’re prepping lots for longer term use.
  • Store in a cool, dry and dark place. For longer term storage, it’s recommended to keep stored in the freezer (especially if not vacuum sealed)

When you take these measures, your trail mix can last for several months, up to a few years!

*Note: recipe below provides instructions for dehydrating and making your own ingredients but you can simply buy ingredients instead
Course Snack
Servings 1
Prep Time 10 minutes
Dehydrating Time 5 hours

Notable Equipment

  • 1 dehydrator and mesh liners optional

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup walnuts
  • 1 tbsp dried pears, (see notes if dehydrating your own)
  • 1 tbsp dried apples, chopped (see notes if dehydrating your own)
  • 1 tbsp pepitas or pumpkin seeds
  • 1 tbsp salted caramel chocolate

Instructions

If buying ingredients:

  • 1. Combine all ingredients in a bag or container and enjoy!

If making your own dehydrated apples and pears:

  • 1. Peel apple and slice into ¼" slices and then cube slices. Disperse on dehydrating tray (on a mesh liner).
  • 2. Slice pear into ¼" slices. Disperse on dehydrating tray (mesh liner recommended).

Notes

  • If making your own dried fruit, using a Bartlett pear is recommended (more noticeable flavour). For apple, use a more sweet and crisp variety.
