Fire Roasted Coconut & Caramel Apples

Recipe score:

Any apple will do for this delicious and easy to make treat. Each piece is lightly browned in butter, sweetened with dulce de leche (milk based caramel sauce), and topped off with a hint of coconut.

Prep Time: < 5 mins

Cooking Method: Campfire, grill, campstove

Cooking Time: 10 mins

Yield: 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 med-large apple (any type)
  • 2 tbsps butter
  • 2-3 tbsps dulce de leche
  • 2 tbsps sweetened shredded coconut

Directions:

  1. Slice apple into 8 slices (or as close to as possible).
  2. Melt 2 tbsps of butter in cast iron or cooking pan over medium heat. Add apples; with one of the flesh sides facing down.
  3. Let cook for 4-5 minutes; flip to other flesh side half way through.
  4. If cooking over the fire, combine slices and butter in a folded foil. Shake half way through.
  5. Apple is done when slightly soft.
  6. Pour dulce de leche on top and sprinkle with coconut. Add more to taste preference.

Voilà! Your coconut & caramel apple is ready to go!

Notes:

  • If cooking on a pan, rinse pan immediately after removing apples to avoid a hardened, sticky coating on the pan. Alternatively, remove apples from pan before pouring the dulce de leche on top (although warm caramel sauce is a nice touch!)
