Fig & Date Trail Mix

Before you go running to the store, let me give you the inside scoop on the key ingredients:

Dried Figs

Native to: Middle East & western Asia

Top 3 nutrients: fiber, potassium, calcium

I prefer to keep my figs whole, but you’re welcome to chop them if you like. Just keep in mind that chopping is best if you plan to enjoy the mix within a couple of weeks, as it helps preserve the figs’ quality.
Dried Dates

Native to: Middle East & North Africa

Top 3 nutrients: natural sugars (energy), fiber, potassium

Buying pitted dates offers convenience and is ideal for quick preparation or easy snacking. However, unpitted dates are worth considering for their advantages: they tend to have a longer shelf life, retain their natural flavour better, and are less likely to contain added preservatives.

Pistachios

Native to: Middle East

Top 3 nutrients: protein, healthy fats, fiber

Unsalted pistachios are best, but salted is fine too! Feel free to buy shelled, but save a good chunk of change and get unshelled (and shell them yourself).

Almonds

Native to: Middle East & South Asia

Top 3 nutrients: healthy fats, vitamin E, magnesium

Raw, roasted, salted or unsalted – the choice is yours!

Chocolate

Native to: Central & South America (cocoa)

Top 3 nutrients: flavonoids, magnesium, iron

I personally prefer dark chocolate with this flavour combo but feel free to use milk chocolate if you prefer. I also like to buy my favourite chocolate and chop it into bite size pieces, but chocolate chips work too!

Storage Instructions

Here are some tips to help you maximize the shelf life of your Fig & Date Trail Mix:

  • Keep stored in a sealable container or bag
  • Vacuum sealing can extend the shelf life by up to three times its normal duration! This is useful if you’re prepping lots for longer term use.
  • Store in a cool, dry and dark place. For longer term storage, it’s recommended to keep stored in the freezer (especially if not vacuum sealed)

When you take these measures, your trail mix can last for several months, up to a couple of years!
